Lakehead Thunderwolves’ sophomore forward Daniel Del Paggio has been named to the U SPORTS Selects team that will represent Canada at the 29th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia on March 2-12.

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) holds this marquee event every two years, and this year Krasnoyarsk will welcome more than 2,500 participants from over 50 countries.

12 teams will compete in men’s hockey.  Canada will open play on March 2 against Great Britain, with Latvia, Switzerland, Sweden, and Kazakhstan making up the rest of the group. The second group includes Hungary, Japan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia and the United States.

Del Paggio is looking forward to his upcoming opportunity.  “It’s both exciting and a little surreal right now, as this is the first time I’ve ever had the chance to represent my country,” the Thunder Bay native said.

Thunderwolves’ Head Coach Andrew Wilkins said, “This is a great opportunity for Daniel to showcase his ability at a great event.  We wish him and team Canada all the best as they pursue the gold medal in Russia.”

Del Paggio led the Thunderwolves in scoring with 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points in 34 games played this season.
