Sophomore Kris Hogg led the Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team to a 5-2 win over the Western Mustangs Saturday night in London, Ontario. Hogg picked up two goals and two assists in the crucial win for the Wolves.
The Wolves continued their 08-09 season trend of dropping the Friday game of a two-game series and then coming back to win the Saturday rematch.
Lakehead now has a 4-3-1 OUA mark (6-8-1 overall) while Western goes to 4-3-1 in OUA action (4-8-1 overall).
It was another hard fought game between these two tough rivals; with the score tied 1-1 after one period and then 2-2 after two. The Wolves put the clamps down on the Stangs and scored three in the third period to get the win.
The other scorers for Lakehead were Tobias Whelan, Brock McPherson, and Mark Soares; who also picked up an assist. Westerns tallies came from Patrick Ouellett and Sal Peralta.
Chris Whitley (2-1 OUA) went all the way in goal for the Wolves to get the win and turned aside 23 Western shots. Brad Topping (3-1 OUA), the hero in the Stangs Friday win, took his first loss of the regular season. Shots on goal were 31-25 Lakehead on the night.
Lakehead was 1-4 on the powerplay and shut down the Stangs PK unit as Western was 0-7 with the man advantage.
Lakehead is on the road again next weekend when they travel to Oshawa, Ontario to challenge the UOIT Ridgebacks in a two-game series.
