Lakehead Sweeps Waterloo with 6-0 Win

The No. 4 Lakehead Thunderwolves swept their two game series over the Waterloo Warriors with a 6-0 win at the Columbia Icefields Arena in Waterloo, Ontario on Saturday night. Lakehead's received strong performances from many players; Joel Scherban, Matt Kenny, and Jeff Richards all registered a goal and two assists each. The game marked Lakehead's, and third year goaltender Grant McCune's, first regular season shutout this year. Lakehead's record rises to 12-2-2 (19-4-3 overall) while Waterloo's record drops to 5-14 in conference play and 7-17 overall.

Lakehead got the only goal of the first period at 4:09, when Mike Jacobsen fired a hard shot from the left circle that beat Waterloo goaltender Scott Gouthro high. The assist went to Jason Lange. Lakehead outshot Waterloo 12-4 in the first.

The Thunderwolves scored quickly at the 53 second mark, when Jeff Richards scored a shorthanded marker, banking the puck from behind the goal line off Waterloo's Mike Della Mora. The assist went to Jason Lange. Matt Kenny made it 3-0 at 10:05, assisted by Richards and Murray Magill. Lakehead Captain Joel Scherban put the Wolves up by four a minute later, assisted by Richards and Kenny. Waterloo netminder made some good saves in the period, including a great stop off Lakehead's Robert Hillier. Waterloo had some chances with about four minutes left, but Lakehead's Grant McCune came up with some good stops. Lakehead outshot Waterloo 22-4 in the second.

Lakehead scored twice in the third to round out the scoring. The first came from Murray Magill, assisted by Scherban and Mike Jacobsen. The second came from Bryan Duce, assisted by Mike Wehrstedt and Matt Kenny. Lakehead outshot Waterloo 14-12 in the third and 48-20 on the game.

Lakehead Head Coach Pete Belliveauwas very happy with his team's performance. "It was our best effort of the year! We've found our heart again! We were working hard all the time, blocking shots, and never stopped hustling! Now, we've got to build on today's game and get ready for tomorrow's game against Laurier."

The Thunderwolves finish their three game road trip on Sunday when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Kitchener, Ontario with game time at 7:00 p.m. EST.
