Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey team are pleased to announce that defenceman Chase Stewart has decided to put his professional hockey career on hold and will be joining the Thunderwolves for the Christmas Challenge games versus Laurentian on December 28-29.
Stewart had committed to Lakehead last August, but wanted to pursue a professional opportunity with the Ottawa Senators farm system first. He played 20 games for the Senators’ ECHL affiliate in Fort Wayne this fall where he scored 4 goals and added 7 assists for 11 points for the Komets.
“I’m happy to be back in Thunder Bay and looking forward to playing at home and helping Lakehead in any way that I can,” Stewart said. I’ll be proud to be represent the Thunderwolves."
The 6’2”, 225-pound rearguard originally from Marathon, Ontario played four years of major junior hockey, his first two in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit. He played his final two seasons in the QMJHL, the first of which was in Saint John where he won the league championship and played in the Memorial Cup tournament. He finished his junior career with Rimouski the following season, where he served as an assistant captain and recorded 29 points.
Thunderwolves’ Head Coach Andrew Wilkins is pleased that Stewart will be joining the team. “Chase is definitely a welcome addition to our lineup as he was playing at a high level in a very good league,” Wilkins said. “He’ll add a lot to our defensive unit and will fit in nicely with our style of game.”
