The No. 6 Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon in Guelph, Ontario. Lakehead now has an 11-3 OUA mark (12-6 overall); while Guelph is 7-8-1 in OUA action.
The Wolves scoring came from Dan Speer and Kris Hogg while Derek Douglas, Richard Cotter, and Kyle Sheridan scored for the Gryphons. Kyle Moir took the loss in goal for the Wolves (3-3 OUA record) while Adam Jennings recorded the win for Guelph. Lakehead was 1-6 on the powerplay while Guelph went 1-7.
There was no scoring in the first period and the Gryphons went up 1-0 on in the second on Cotters goal. Lakeheads Dan Speer tied the game at 4:41 of the third but the Gryphons scored two unanswered goals which seemed to seal the game until Lakeheads Kris Hogg scored with 1:48 left. Then Lakeheads Tobias Whelan was given a penalty shot with 27 seconds left but he couldnt beat Guelph relief netminder Adam Arklie and the Gryphons held on for the win. .
The Wolves end the first half of OUA play next weekend at home when they welcome the powerful Brock Badgers to the Fort William Gardens next Friday and Saturday nights.
