Netminder Chris Whitley and sniper Jeff Richards led the No.3 Lakehead Thunderwolves to a thrilling 4-2 win over the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies and the win means Lakehead will play for the CIS National Championship Sunday night at Rexall Place at 9:00 pm EST against Alberta. Whitley turned aside 39 Saskatchewan shots including some stellar saves while Richards scored a natural hat trick for the Wolves.
Lakeheads other goal came from Mike Jacobsen while Bryce Thoma and Trent Adamus tallied for the Huskies. Saskatchewan outshot Lakehead 41-34 in the game. Both teams were assessed six minor penalties and both scored once on the powerplay. Whitley was named Lakeheads Player of the Game while Bryce Thoma won the honour for Saskatchewan.
Lakehead Head Coach Pete Belliveau said his team battled hard. First of all, we played a great team in the Saskatchewan Huskies and Id like to commend them for a great season. Whitley had to be our best player and he was and Scherbans line had to shut down the Huskies Beuker and Twordik and they did. The guys executed well and worked very hard for the win.
