The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-2 on Saturday night at the Windsor Arena, giving the Wolves a weekend sweep and sole possession of first place in the OUA West Division.

Just like the night before, the Thunderwolves pounced on the Lancers early. Adam Sergerie beat Windsor goalie Peter Van Buskirk just 52 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal, and then just 20 seconds later Sergerie and Trevor Gamache set up Ryan McDonald to put Lakehead up 2-0. That was all the scoring in the first period, which ended with the Wolves outshooting the Lancers 16-6.

Lakehead extended its lead to 3-0 at 8:41 of the second period when Sergerie potted his second goal of the game, assisted by Mike Quesnele and Victor Anilane. Windsors Mark Thorburn cut the gap to 3-1 when he blasted one past Wolves goalie Alex Dupuis at 13:42, and then the Lancers' Spencer Pommels scored on the powerplay at 18:27 to make the score 3-2 for Lakehead going into the final frame. Shots on goal were 9 apiece in the second stanza.

Lakehead played a strong defensive game in the third period, allowing only 4 Windsor shots while putting 10 on the Lancers goal. The Thunderwolves iced the game at 19:01 when Devin Welsh found the back of the net, with assists on the goal going to McDonald and Andrew Wilkins.

The final shots on goal tally was 35-19 in favor of Lakehead.

The Thunderwolves' win, combined with Western Ontarios loss at Laurier, gives Lakehead a two-point lead in their division.

The Wolves return home next weekend for a pair of games with the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Fort William Gardens.
