The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team will begin its OUA regular season this weekend with home games versus two long-time rivals. The Wolves will wrangle with the Western Mustangs on Friday evening before battling the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, with the opening face-off set for 7:00 p.m. at the Fort William Gardens on both nights.
After winning four straight games at home by sweeping both Lethbridge and Nipissing, the Thunderwolves lost a difficult road test at Bemidji State last Saturday, falling 5-1 to the Beavers.
Western and Windsor opened conference play against each other last Wednesday, with Windsor winning 4-2 at home. Western rebounded on Thursday by defeating Waterloo 4-3, and Windsor improved its OUA record to 2-0 by downing Laurier 7-4 on Friday night.
Lakehead is 28-45-1 all-time versus Western, the only team in the OUA West Division with a winning record against the Thunderwolves. The Wolves have fared much better against Windsor over the years, with a record of 43-22-0 over the Lancers.
Those records were reflected in last season’s results as Lakehead went and 0-3 against Western (with two of those losses coming in overtime) and 3-0 versus Windsor.
Like they did last season, Scott Gall and Daniel Del Paggio are once again pacing the Wolves on offense, but this year they’ve had plenty of help from the rest of the team.
Of the 22 skaters that have seen playing time in Lakehead’s first five games, 20 Thunderwolves have recorded at least one point, and 14 of them have notched two points or more.
