The Calgary Dinos were bridesmaids for the second year in a row as UNB goaltender and tournament MVP Reg Bourcier led his V-Reds to a 1-0 shutout victory in the Bell Varsity Cup Championship game before 1,921 fans at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay. Calgary had also lost last year's tourney final to Lakehead. Bourcier turned aside 40 Calgary shots in the game. Kyle Werner's goal at 15:36 of the first period was all the V-Reds needed as the fast skating Dinos could not solve Bourcier on this day.

Action started fast with the Reds breaking down into the Dinos zone. Reds d-man Jesse Ferguson launched a rocket from the point that was handled nicely by Dinos netminder Aaron Baker. The V-Reds buzzed the Dinos net and forced Baker to come up with three good stops. Calgary then went on the powerplay and UNB goalie Reg Bourcier had to make two fines saves. At even strength again, the two teams went up and down the ice with Calgary getting a couple good shots at Bourcier. UNB put on the pressure at the halfway mark of the period forcing a Calgary penalty. Calgary's penalty kill unit was very effective and the Reds couldn't get the puck over the red line. The Dinos then went on the powerplay and peppered Bourcier but couldn't put it past him. But, the V-Reds went up the ice and Kyle Werner scored at 15:36, when he re-directed a low wrist shot from the point by Jason Hegberg. UNB went on the powerplay again with two minutes left but couldn't get any sustained pressure. Calgary outshot UNB 18-15 in the first.

The second period was tighter and slower moving than the first as both teams played dump and chase. Calgary went on the powerplay at the 6:00 mark and had one good chance when Sean Robertson took a booming shot that was gloved nicely by Bourcier. Robertson then crushed UNB's Calvin Watson into the boards. The pace picked up at this point with both teams crashing the boards for the puck. Calgary's Baker made a nice stick stop off a hard shot by the V-Reds Kyle Werner. Baker followed with another save when UNB's Rob Hegberg fired a quick wrist shot from the right side. Calgary's Travis George then rang the right UNB post with a hard low blast from the point at 11:00. Dinos netminder Baker made a nice shoulder stop off a hard shot by the Reds Scott Markowski. Baker then made a quick glove save off a point shot by Jean Michel Boisvert. The V-Reds had the better part of the play in this period, especially the last three minutes where they sprayed shots at Calgary's Baker. But, a last minute UNB penalty gave the Dinos some life and the almost put the puck past Bourcier, but Reds d-man Kevin Werner saved a goal when he knocked the puck away from danger as it was rolling into the V-Reds net.

The Dinos came out skating fast at the opening of the third, pressing the Reds. UNB's Bourcier made a quick stop on a wraparound attempt by Dinos Captain Ken Mckay. Bourcier then made a nice save off Calgary's Wes Reid. Calgary went on the powerplay and UNB's Bourcier made a great sliding save to rob the Dinos Richard Mueller. The Dinos poured barraged Bourcier but he made four great stops to keep Calgary off the scoreboard. Bourcier then made an incredible glove save off Sean Robertson who jumped on a rebound off a point shot by Travis George.

The Dinos came close again when Richard Mueller centred the puck in front of the UNB goal, but Ken Mckay couldn't convert in the ensuing goalmouth scramble. Calgary netminder Baker had to come up with a good save off the Reds Ryan Mockler at the 13:00 mark. The Dinos Josh Woitas just missed with 4 minutes left as Bourcier made a quick pad save. UNB's Denny Johnston was called for tripping and 16:15. Calgary pressed and Bourcier stoppe
