Former Lakehead Thunderwolves goaltender Chris Whitley has added a new line to his resume, as the Oshawa, Ontario native has been formally invited to the Detroit Red Wings 2009-10 training camp to be held September 13 -15 at Traverse City, Michigan.
The 2007-08 OUA Most Valuable Player, Whitley was a member of the Thunderwolves 2005-06 Queens Cup championship team and is Lakeheads all-time winningest goalie, having built an 81-48-7 career CIS record.
Whitley is looking forward to the opportunity to compete at the 11-time Stanley Cup winners camp.
Its a great honour and the top of my hockey career thus far to get invited to an NHL training camp, Whitley said. I got the call from the assistant general manager [Jim Nill] and am definitely excited to head down to Traverse City in September.
Thunderwolves head coach, Joel Scherban, played with Whitley for two seasons and is happy to see his former teammate receive his invitation.
Chris is extremely deserving of such a tremendous opportunity, Scherban said. He has made a great effort over the past five years to continue to develop his game to the point where hes prepared to succeed at the professional level. We thank Chris for his outstanding play with Thunderwolves and we wish him the best of luck in his professional career.
