OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), as the Canadian representative of the Fdration Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU), is pleased to announce the athletes and staff that will represent Canada in men's ice hockey at the 2005 Winter Universiade in Innsbruck/Seefeld, Austria from January 12-22.

Canada's representative in the Winter Universiade ice hockey tournament is appointed on a rotating basis between the three conferences of men's hockey in the CIS. The 2005 team consists of players from Ontario University Athletics (OUA), which also includes three teams from the Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF).

Team Canada was selected this past weekend following a four-day training camp at Woodstock, Ontario, which included a pair of games against the Belarus National Junior team. The Canadians swept the exhibition series with back-to-back 5-4 victories.

The CIS No. 4 ranked Western Mustangs placed seven players on the roster, followed by the No. 3 Lakehead Thundervolves who have five players headed to Austria. The defending OUA Champion York Lions have three members on the squad, while the UQTR Patriotes and the Laurier Golden Hawks each have two players on the team.

"The Winter Universiade represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for the players and staff to represent Canada at the international level," said Team Canada head coach Clarke Singer. "We all admire and respect the tradition that is synonymous with Canadian Hockey around the world. We hope to represent that long standing tradition by bringing home the gold in January."

Canada will compete in a pool with China, Czech Republic, Japan, Ukraine and defending champion Russia. The Canadians open the tournament on January 13 against China.

Canada won the men's ice hockey tournament at the Winter Universiade in 1991 (National Team) and 1981 (Alberta Golden Bears). The country has collected a total of nine medals. The Canada West all-stars captured silver at the last Universiade in Tarvisio, Italy in 2003. In their last appearance at the Universiade in 1999, the OUA all-stars earned bronze.
