CIS Team Canada Sweeps Belarus Juniors

WOODSTOCK, ONT. - Mike Rice (University of Western Ontario, Toronto, Ont.) scored once and added two assists as the Canadian Winter Universiade men's hockey team defeated the Belarus National Junior team 5-4 at Woodstock, Ontario
on Saturday. With the win, Canada sweeps the two-game exhibition series 2-0 with back-to-back 5-4 victories.

Team Canada, which will participate in the 2005 Winter Universiade in Innsbruck/Seefeld, Austria in January, is comprised of players from Ontario University Athletics (OUA). Twenty-four of the top players in the conference are competing for 22 rosters spots at the team's training camp in Woodstock(December 15-19). Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) will announce the final roster selection on Monday, December 20.

The Belarus National Junior team will compete at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota (December 25-January 4).

Jamie Chamberlain (University of Western Ontario, Sarnia, Ont.) scored twice for the Canadians, while Benoit Martin (McGill University, Gaspe, Que.) and Mike Nason (University of Toronto, Pickering, Ont.) added singles. Rice was selected as the team's Player of the Game.

Alexei Efimenko, with three goals including two power play markers and a short-handed tally, was the Belarus Player of the Game. Alexei Ugarov, while short-handed, had the other Belarus goal.

The Canadians played three goaltenders for the second consecutive night. Grant McCune (Lakehead University, Sherwood Park, Alta.) started the game and allowed one goal on eight shots. Mike D'Alessandro (University of Western Ontario,
Peterborough, Ont.) played the second period, allowing two goals on 15 shots, while Dany Dallaire (UQTR, St. Narcisse de Beaurivage, Que.) allowed one goal on eight shots.

Canada was 4-for-7 on the power play, while Belarus went 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
