The second day of Bell Varsity Cup action opened with the Calgary Dinos dismantling the York Lions 6-0. The win puts the Dinos tourney record at 1-1 and York's record falls to 0-2 in round robin play. The Lions again seemed to lack the offensive spark provided by leader scorer Daryl Bat, who is out due to injury. The Dinos were led by Mark Grumetza with 2 goals and Colin McRae who added a goal and 2 assists. York goaltender Derek Dolson made many spectacular saves to keep the score down, turning aside 55 Calgary shots.

The first period opened very quickly and featured some crunching hits by Calgary's Sheldon Nedjelski and York's Steve Chabbert. The Dinos applied the early pressure but York goaltender Derek Dolson made a lot of good stops in the first five minutes to keep Calgary off the board. But, the Dinos finally broke through at 4:03 when Mark Grumetza fired a point blast that beat a screened Dolson low to the glove side. The assist went to Colin McRae. Calgary successfully killed off a 5-on-3 and Trevor Galan even scored a beautiful shorthanded goal at 7:04, beating Dolson high with a quick snapshot. The assist went to Drew Campbell. York again had a 5-on-3 powerplay but couldn't capitalize. York's Jon Hedberg made a good defensive play when he stopped a sure Dinos goal by batting the puck out of the air as it was falling into the Lions goal. Dolson made a nice glove save off a Jordan Walker's point blast. Calgary outshot York 23-6 in the first period.

The Dinos came out flying in the second and kept up the barrage on Dolson. Dolson made a fine reaction save to rob Calgary's Jeff Yopyk who was parked in front of the net. Wesley Reid put the Dinos up 3-0 at 5:50, assisted by Colin McRae and Philiph Barski. The Dinos Adam Dumbrowski was given a five minute major and ejected from the game for hitting York's Rich Williams from behind heavily into the boards. Fortunately, Williams came back later to play in the game. But, unfortunately for the Lions, they again couldn't capitalize on another great powerplay opportunity. York's Dolson made save after save to keep the score down, but finally Pat Tetley knocked in a rebound at 16:38, after Dolson had made a great glove save off Adam Lonca, who was given the assist. Shots on goal were 22-3 for Calgary.

Dolson started out the third by making another series of saves of a variety of Calgary shooters. The Dinos Mark Grumetza got his second of the game at 5:30 to make it 5-0, set up by a lovely give and go with Philiph Barski. Matt Jenkens got the other assist. Calgary's McRae got a lucky bounce as his shot went off a York defenseman to make it 6-0 at 17:25. Assists went to Tetley and Reid. Shots on goal were 16-5 in the third for Calgary and 61-15 for the game.

The Molson's Three Stars, as selected by Leith Dunick of Thunder Bay's Source, were
1)Calgary: Mark Grumetza
2)Calgary: Colin McRae
3)Calgary: Philiph Barski

Calgary takes to the ice in tomorrow afternoon's game against UNB while York will play in the night game against Lakehead in the final day of Bell Varsity Cup round robin play.
