I would like to take this space to say thanks and farewell to a great friend and supporter of Lakehead Athletics; Mr. Leith Dunick; who up to this past week was the publisher and editor of the weekly Thunder Bay Source newspaper in Thunder Bay. Leith came to Thunder Bay from his native Halifax three and a half years ago in July of 2002 and, being a sports fanatic, looked for local sports to cover and discovered CIS sports and the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Leith turned the Thunder Bay Source into a fantastic weekly paper and developed a great sports section in the paper as well as on the Sources website. Much of his coverage was on Thunderwolves teams and players during the university season. Leith also went out of his way to help the Thunderwolves; whether it was in editing the hockey yearbook, supplying me with a game picture or two, doing in-depth player profiles, or being a guest commentator or stats person for Dougall Medias radio or tv coverage of Lakehead hockey. Some of Leiths articles on the Thunderwolves were picked up by papers across Canada which only helps in promoting Lakehead teams andthe Lakehead name nationally.

Leith left this past Friday to return to Halifax where he will take a new position with the Halifax Daily News as a copy editor and sports reporter. Leith, a graduate of St. Marys in Halifax, started his journalism career at the Daily News and felt it was time to return home.

Leith said he will have warm memories of his time spent covering Lakehead Thunderwolves varsity sports. Sports have played an integral role in my three-plus years in Thunder Bay. Some of my fondest sporting memories will be the hundreds of hours spent at Fort William Gardens or the Thunderdome watching the hockey and basketball teams do what they do best. I can truly say I've seen some of the best athletes the country has to offer and I will sincerely miss not being able to watch the likes of Joel Scherban, Tara Boyce, or Kiraan Posey again. The teams may not have won every game, but they gave it their all each and every time, which is all anyone can ask for.
