Lakehead Athletics is proud to announce the commitment of Jordan Smith to attend Lakehead University and play for the Thunderwolves mens hockey program beginning in January of 2007. His academic goals at Lakehead are to study to become a teacher.

Smith, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, played in the OHL for the Soo Greyhounds and was drafted in the second round by the Anaheim Ducks. Last year, in his first season of pro hockey with the AHL Portland Pirates, the 6 2 220 pound defenseman was struck in the left eye by a puck which resulted in the loss of sight in that eye and the implementation of a new mandatory visor law in the AHL this season.

Smith said he is excited about the chance to get his university education and to resume playing hockey. Im honoured to attend an excellent institution like Lakehead as well as to join a great hockey program. Im definitely excited and really looking forward to achieving my academic goal of graduating as well as helping the hockey team achieve its goal of a national championship.

Lakehead Athletics Director Tom Warden said Smith will be a fantastic addition to Lakeheads hockey program. Any time that our hockey program can recruit a person of Jordans character, quality, and athletic ability is certainly a positive thing for Lakehead University and the City of Thunder Bay. Im looking forward to seeing him in a Thunderwolves jersey.

Lakehead Head Coach Pete Belliveau said Smith will be a great addition to the Thunderwolves. We are extremely excited about adding a young man with such strong character and great skill to our roster. He is the type of person who will help lead this program into the future. We are very happy to have him with the Thunderwolves.
