Lakehead University Athletics and Athletics Director Tom Warden are very proud to announce that Lakehead Athletics has teamed up with the organizers of the Pinewood Ford Golf Tournament to establish the 1st Annual RBC Golf Classic in support of Thunderwolves student-athletes. The new RBC Golf Classic will take place at the Whitewater Golf Club on August 2nd, 2007.

The previous incarnation of the tournament, the Pinewood Ford Golf Tournament, was run by Pinewood Ford from 1997-2006 and during that time tournament organizers raised over $400,000 in support of local charities. The new RBC Golf Classic format will be similar to years past, and the previous organizers have teamed up with Lakehead Athletics to begin a new chapter in Thunder Bay golfing history.

Warden said Lakehead Athletics is very excited about this new event which will help bring top student-athletes to Lakehead. Athletics scholarships and athletics awards are an important part of recruiting elite student-athletes to our university and our community so wed like to thank everybody involved in this great event for helping us achieve that goal. Were very thankful to the previous organizing committee for passing this event on to us; formerly the Pinewood Golf Tournament. Wed like to thank RBC and all our major sponsors and were looking forward to putting on one of the best golf tournaments in Northwestern Ontario.

Student-athletes are unique in the world of sports because they have two demanding and equally important priorities ; their education and their sport. It is by balancing these priorities and building character that they build character and become role models for us all, both on the playing field and as exemplary young adults. The proceeds of the 1st Annual RBC Golf Classic will directly benefit Lakeheads student-athletes in the form of scholarships.

Taking part in the RBC Golf Classic gives local golfers the opportunity to support these young men and women and helps them excel against the competition and, in turn, creates young heroes to promote sport and fitness and healthy lifestyle choices throughout Northwestern Ontario. The tournament's mission is exactly the same; the region can never have too many local sports heroes.

The tournament will likely be the biggest of the summer, and and will be held at Whitewater Golf Club, one of the top-rated courses in Ontario. The 1st Annual RBC Golf Classic will have a car, truck, boat or RV on every hole, available to be won by the golfer(s) who sink a hole-in-one. All holes will be shortened to par-3's to ensure the shot is possible. Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Supper and awards will commence at 7:00 p.m. Major prizes will also be awarded to the top finishing teams, closest to the hole, and in addition there will be random team draws. There will be two complimentary golf carts for each team of four.

The 1st Annual RBC Golf Classic will guarantee you will have a great time and maybe you'll be one of those driving away in a brand new won car!
