Lakehead Athletics is very proud to release the list of Lakehead Thunderwolves varsity athletes who achieved RBC Academic All Canadian honours or OUA Academic Achievement Awards for 2005-06. To achieve this prestigious award; the student athlete must play a CIS or OUA varsity sport and achieve a classroom average of 80%. An OUA Academic Achievement Award is comparable to the RBC Academic All Canadian award but is given to student-athletes who participate in sports that are only played in the OUA conference level and not at the CIS national level.
This year had 18 academic award winners and Mens hockey and womens basketball led the way with four RBC Academic All Canadians apiece, cross-country had three, while wrestling, track, and womens volleyball had one each. Lakeheads OUA championship and CIS-CCUNC national championship Nordic ski teams had four OUA Academic Achievement Award winners.
The four hockey players were team captain Joel Scherban, Murray Magill, Hugo Lehoux, and Kris Callaway. This was the second consecutive year that both Lehoux and Callaway were named RBC Academic All Canadians.
Lakehead Athletic Director Tom Warden said he was very proud of this distinguished group of student athletes. I want to congratulate this years winners of the RBC Academic All Canadian and OUA Academic Achievement awards. I am very proud of them because it is no small task for them to reach such high results in the classroom while still training daily and performing to the maximum in their chosen varsity sports. Again, congratulations on a great job and for representing Lakehead Athletics so well.
