Lakehead completes sweep of long time rival Western Mustangs 5-3
The chippiness from Friday night carried over to Saturday and the 2667 fans in attendance were treated to an entertaing game on Saturday evening.
Lakehead would get on the board first on Teddy Bear Toss night when Olivier Pouliot would finish off a feed from Malte Hasselgren to get the stuffies raining down from the stands. After a delay in getting the stuffed animals picked up the Wolves would keep coming and increase the lead to 2-0 when Luke Janus would tip a Jack Cook shot past Western's Jack McNaughton.
Western would answer back shortly after short handed off the stick of Owen MacNiel to cut the lead to 2-1. Lakehead would answer back before the end of the period with a short handed goal of their own when Caden Drury would slip the puck past the Western netminder for a 3-1 lead heading into the break.
The second period would see the chippiness escalate with both teams getting into scrums multiple times after whistles which would see them parading to the box. Western would find cut into the lead when Zach Power would wrist a shot past Cherepak. Laklehead would get a late powerplay and would make Western pay when Austin Peters would rip a shot past McNaiughton to get the crowd on their feet.
The third would see Western inch closer when Nicholas Yearwood would snap a shot past Carson Cherepak to make it 4-3. Western would then take 6 consecutive penalties and Lakehead would convert on one late in the period when Naaman Hofer would rip a point shot past a screened McNaughton to seal the game for the Wolves.
