The staff and faculties of Lakehead University and Confederation College faced off in the 7th annual Hank Akervall Memorial Challenge game Dec. 8th at the Fort William Gardens with the Lakehead side coming out victorious, notching a 7-3 win. The game is held each year as a fundraising memorial to ex Lakehead Hockey Coach, faculty member, and 1964 Olympic Team Captain, Hank Akervall. The game also serves as a fun-filled way for the faculties and staff of the two post secondary institutions to get together each year. This year money was collected for the Lakehead University Student Union Food Bank and Confederation College Student Food Bank.

Lakehead University President Fred Gilbert said it was a fun event for all. "This annual competition not only honors Hank Akervall's memory and his contributions to Lakehead hockey but it also brings the two post-secondary institutions together in a friendly rivalry. As has been the case every year to date the Lakehead Old Wolves were victorious but the College's goalie was spectacular."

Lakehead bombarded Confederation College netminder Mike Kelly with 100 shots, outshooting the college side 100-30. Kelly, Coordinator of Medical Radiation Technology at the college, was rumoured to be wearing a protective lead vest under his goaltender equipment so as not to be burned by the radiation emitted from the red goal light flashing so frequently.

Scoring for Lakehead were Michelle Bedard with a pair, Laurie Chambers with a penalty shot tally, Fred Gilbert, Ryan Marostica, Wild Bill Montelpare, and Tom Warden with singles while Randy Camlin, Jeff Howie, and Mark Anger replied for Confederation College. Lakehead is now 7-0 in the annual competition.
