Lakehead comes back to win in overtime in the first of 2 games in Nipigon Ontario.
The first period would see the Thunderwolves dictate the play and after killing off a penalty Malte Hasselgren would dance in a stick handle right around York’s Matt Tovell to put the Wolves up 1-0. Lakehead would out shoot York 14-8 in the first period.
The second would see York come out ready to go and struck twenty seconds in When Keeton Oakley would beat Ciciigoi to get York on the board. York would get goals from Ethan Strik and Brendan McCarthy to increase there lead to 3-1. Lakehead would strike before the end of the period when Richard Whittaker would rifle one past Matt Tovell to cut the lead to 3-2 before the end of the period.
York would strike forty seconds into the third on the powerplay when Chase Sandhu would wrist a shot past Cicigoi to up the York lead to 4-2. Lakehead’s Luke Janus would the lead to 4-3 when he drilled a shot past Tovell to the delight of the capacity crowd at the Nipgion Community Centre. Lakehead would keep pressuring and with Cicigoi out for the extra attacker Olivier Pouliot would let a shot fly from the point ant it would sail by Matt Tovell to tie the game up at 4 and send it to overtime.
In overtime both teams would get some solid chances but Lakehead would get the winner when Malte Hasselgren would finish off a beauty of a pass from Nicholas DeGrazia to send the Nipigon crowd into a frenzy. Lakehead would outshoot York 40-34 in the game.
