Laurier and UQTR Set to Face Off in Queen's Cup

March 6, 2007 - Laurier 7, Waterloo 6- Game 2 (Laurier defeats Waterloo 2 game to 0). It took 4:01 of overtime, but No.3 Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the No.6 Waterloo Warriors 7-6. The victory advances the Golden Hawks to the Queens Cup mens hockey provincial championship for the first time since the 1991/92 season. The two game sweep over the Warriors marks the second consecutive season in which the Hawks have defeated their cross-town rivals. In a penalty filled affaire which saw 31 minor penalties assessed and eight 10 minute misconducts, but it was Warrior, Ryan McGregors (Carleton Place, Ontario) hat-trick performance, which almost stole the show this past Friday night. Yet Lauriers Rob Dmytruk (Scarborough, Ontario) played the hero on the night as he scored his second goal of the game and series winner with a shot from the top of the circle almost halfway into the overtime period. "It was a gutsy performance by the whole group," commented first-year head coach Kelly Nobes. "The team battled adversity and found a way to win. We beat a great hockey team led by Brian Bourque. Theyve given us adversity all season long." Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ontario) faced 40 shots in the win while stand out goaltender Curtis Darling (Calgary, Alberta) saw 44 shots over the 64 minutes of play in a losing effort.

UQTR 5, Toronto 4- Game 2- (UQTR defeats Toronto 2 games to 0)
UQTRs Thiery Poudrier (Victoriaville, Quebec) scored at 17:21 in the second over-time period to eliminate the Toronto Varsity Blues from OUA mens hockey playoff action. Varsity Blues stand out goaltender Ryan Grinnell (Toronto, Ontario) kept his team in it until the end, turning aside 46 shots in the contest. Poudrier and teammate Jonathan Boutin (St. Constant, Quebec) each had two goal performances in UQTRs victory. Torontos goals came at the hands of four individual goals from Simon Barg (Ashburn, Ontario), Anthony Pallotta (Bolton, Ontario), Mark Heatley (Calgary, Alberta), and Joe Rand (Hamilton, Ontario). Barg lead his team on the night with three assists along with his goal as the Varsity Blues looked to cap off their Cinderella season with a trip to the Queens Cup. UQTR returns to the Queens Cup after a years departure which saw them lose the bronze medal to the Laurier Golden Hawks in 2006.
