The Lakehead Thunderwolves were defeated 6-3 by the York Lions at the Beatrice Ice Gardens in Toronto Saturday night. Jeff Richards again led the way for the Wolves as the Lakehead captain again scored two goals and added an assist; giving him four goals and two assists on the weekend. Tobias Whelan notched Lakeheads other tally.
Bad news for the Wolves however was that Richards was hurt early in the third and did not return to the lineup for the rest of the game.
York was led by Matt Passfield with 2 goals and an assist. Singles came from Vitaly Lanochkin, Rob Bohomme, Jesse Grespan, and Blair Grennier.
Although the Lions won 6-3; the story of the game was York goaltender Kevin Druce who turned aside 44 Lakehead shots; and many of them dangerous scoring opportunities. Official shots on goal were listed as 47-44 for Lakehead.
Lakehead now has a 13-9-2-2 OUA record (16-16-2-2 overall); while York is 13-9-3-1 in OUA play (15-16-3-1 overall). The teams are tied in points and they will face each other in the first round of the OUA West playoffs. Both teams have two games to go and those games will decide which team will get the home ice advantage for the first round series.
Lakeheads final two games are at home next weekend when they host the Western Mustangs Friday and Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay. Althought the Mustangs clinched third overall in the OUA West Saturday night with a win over Guelph; they will still be coming to play against their arch rivals from Lakehead in what should be a spirited series.
