Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey program are pleased to announce that senior defenceman Luke Maw has been elected as the teams captain for the 2014-15 season.

The players cast their votes during one-on-one meetings with Head Coach Bill McDonald on Monday.

McDonald thinks very highly of the teams choice. Luke Maw is always the first one to lend a hand to a teammate, and hes well respected by his peers and that showed in the voting. McDonald said. I think Luke and the assistant captains will be a great leadership group.

In something a little out of the ordinary, the squad will have four assistant captains this year. Fifth-year senior defenceman Mike Quesnele and senior forward Mike Hammond will wear the A when the Thunderwolves wear their blue jerseys, while senior defenceman Mitch Fillman and junior forward Carson Dubchak will handle the role of assistants when the Wolves wear their whites.

Maw is pleased to be taking on his new responsibility. "Id like to thank my teammates as well as Coach McDonald and his staff, as Im honored that theyve given me the opportunity to be the captain of the Lakehead Thunderwolves, he said. I plan to do my best in this role and Im excited for the upcoming season because I believe we have the right guys in our dressing room to produce a winning team."

The Beeton, Ontario native will officially begin his new role Friday night when Lakehead travels to Kitchener to kick-off the OUA regular season at Waterloo and Laurier on Friday and Saturday nights respectively.

The team will return home Sunday afternoon for a brief respite before bussing down to Duluth on Monday morning for a non-conference game against the UMD Bulldogs that night.
