McGill Qualifies for University Cup

The McGill Redmen have qualified for the University Cup CIS Mens Hockey championships at the end of March in Thunder Bay as they defeated No. 5 UQTR 2-1 Friday night in Montreal to sweep Les Patriotes 2-0.

McGill joins host Lakehead, No. 1 UNB, and No. 4SaintMarys as four of the six University Cup teams have now been determined. The remaining two berths go to the winner of the OUA West Final series between No. 6 Western and No. 3 Laurier (Western leads 1-0) and the Canada West Champion.

In Canada West playoff action Friday night; Regina defeated Manitoba 3-2 in Winnipeg to take a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-three Can West quarter-final series while UBC defeated Lethbridge 5-4 in OT in Lethbridge to take a 1-0 lead in their series. No. 2 Alberta and No. 8 Saskatchewan have playoff byes and await the winners of the two quarter-finals.

Lakehead has an all-time record of 5 wins and 1 tie against McGill; 1 win and a tie in regular season play, 3-0 in non-conference play, and 1-0 in the playoffs. The last time the two teams met was in the Queens Cup Final in 2006 in Thunder Bay that saw the Wolves skate to a 4-0 win.
