CIS championship hosts selection
15 hosts unveiled, men's basketball to stay in Halifax in 2006 & 2007

Dec. 3, 2004

OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced on Friday morning the selection of 15 national championship hosts for the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09 competitive seasons.

The CIS selection committee met in Ottawa on Monday and Tuesday for bid presentations by potential hosts, and the CIS board of directors ratified the committee's decisions on Tuesday night. Selected championship hosts have 60 days following the reception of a contract written by the CIS to sign the document, thus finalizing the selection process.

"Canadian Interuniversity Sport is delighted with the amount of interest in hosting championships," said CIS chief executive officer, Marg McGregor. "The bids were all outstanding which made the selection of hosts extremely difficult. In the end, the CIS is confident that the selected hosts will organize outstanding events."

The return of the men's basketball championship to Halifax for a 23rd and 24th consecutive year in the spring of 2006 and 2007 highlights the decisions made by the CIS this week. Atlantic University Sport, who already owned the rights to organize the Final 10 for the 2004-05 season, has hosted the event in Halifax with unprecedented success since 1984, with the tournament being played at the Metro Centre since 1988.

The CIS best men's hockey players will skate for the University Cup in Moncton in 2006-07 and 2007-08, while their female counterparts will try to capture the CIS banner in the nation's capital those same years. The Universite de Moncton previously hosted the men's hockey nationals in 1981-82 and 1982-83, with future NHL coaches Jean Perron and Dave King leading their teams to victory. The University of Ottawa will host the women's championship for the first time.

Other institutions which get to organize CIS championships for the first time are the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB), based in Sydney, N.S., awarded the women's soccer tournament for the fall of 2007, and Trinity Western University, which will host women's soccer stars one year later in Langley, B.C. The women's soccer Spartans were crowned national champions two weeks ago, claiming a first CIS title in school history for Trinity Western.
