February 6, 2006 (OUA)- Wins are nothing new to the Laurier Golden Hawks, who sit stop the OUAs Mid West Division. But the Hawks pulled off one of their finest victories this year as they downed the No. 4 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs 5-3 Saturday in Waterloo. Riley Moher had a goal and two assists for the Hawks, while Richard Colvill was credited with the winning-goal when he scored on a power play at 14:08 of the second period. Justin Day was huge in goal for Laurier, stopping 43 of the 26 shots he faced. Ryan Waldner scored twice for the Mustangs. The loss was just the second on the season for the Mustangs, who now sit at 19-2-1-0 on top of the Far West. Laurier also beat rival Waterloo 2-1 Wednesday thanks Dan Ehrmans winner at 12:44 of the third period. Colvill opened the scoring for the Hawks in the game with his 12th of the season before setting up Ehrman in the third. Adam Metherel replied for the Warriors.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves enjoyed a successful trip to St. Catharines as they took two from the Brock Badgers in a two-game series, including a 3-2 OT victory Friday. The teams exchanged goals in both the second and third period before Jeff Richards iced it for the visitors, scoring at 4:36 of the overtime period. Grant McCune made 26 saves in net for the win. Captain Joel Scherban and Jason Lange had a goal and an assist each as Lakehead took the second meeting 4-2 Saturday. McCune stopped 24 shots for his second victory in as many days, while Langes goal was the winner, coming at 17:43 of the second period. Ryan Del Monte and Jonathon Labelle scored for Brock. The wins improve Lakeheads record to 13-7-2-0 on the season.

After losing 6-2 to Western Thursday, the Guelph Gryphons responded with a great effort against the Warriors in an 8-5 win Saturday. Matt Willoughby and Adam Roth had two goals and an assist each, while OUA scoring leader Jesse Pyatt and Thomas Laplante added a goal and two assists apiece. Guelph jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes, peppering Waterloo standout goaltender Curtis Darling. Kevin Hurley had two goals and an assist for the Warriors, while Shane Hart also tallied twice.

The McGill Redmen vaulted to the top of the national rankings last week along with the Alberta Golden Bears and the Far East leaders were impressive in a busy week of play. McGill opened up the week with a 2-2 draw with rival UQTR Patriotes Tuesday. Charles Gauthier and Ken Davis both scored in the third period to pull the Redmen even after going down 2-0. McGill was too much for the Ryerson Rams Friday as the Redmen out-shout the Rams 48-7 en route to a 7-0 blowout win. The shut-out was McGills CIS-record 10th of the year. The Redmen were in tough against the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday in Montreal but Benoit Martins goal at 2:39 of overtime gave the hosts a dramatic 3-2 win. Ken Morin and Marko Kovacevic also scored for the Redmen, while CIS goals against average leader Mathieu Poitras made 24 saves for his 12th win this year. Simon Barg and Mark Heatley scored for Toronto.

UQTR defeated the Concordia Stingers 3-2 Friday, while the Windsor Lancers blanked the York Lions 4-0. Jay Ewasiuk stopped all 27 shots he faced for the shut-out. On Saturday, Trevor Penrose scored at 9:20 of the third period to help York to a 2-1 win over the Lancers in their second meeting of the weekend. The Ottawa-Gees routed Ryerson 9-2 as Adam Vaughan notched the hat-trick, including the first two Ottawa goals in the opening period. In Sundays only game, the Gee-Gees and Blues battled to a 1-1 draw. Torontos Ray Smegal opened the scoring at 3:39 of the first period but Ottawas Ben McLeod responded later in the frame to even it up at 1-1. The Gee-Gees out-shot the Blues 37-24.
