November 28, 2005 - The Brock Badgers pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year so far as goaltender Matt Harpwood stopped 56 of 57 shots fired his way in a 2-1 win over the fourth-ranked UQTR Patriotes Friday. UQTR scored on its first shot of the game from Nicolas Pelletier but Harpwood, a Welland, ON native stopped everything fired his way for the rest of the game. Brock tied the game 1-1 on a wrist shot that beat goaltender Dany Dallaire and then secured the win with just 1:38 remaining in the third period on a redirect from Jason Harshaw. The Badgers continued the tough trip through Quebec the following day against the Concordia Stingers but couldnt manufacture the same type of result. Third-year winger Frederic Faucher scored twice and added an assist as the Stingers defeated the Badgers 3-2. Philippe Lacasse added a goal and two assists. Patrick Lepage made 24 saves for Concordia to earn the win. Brock is 6-5-2-0 after 13 games topping the Mid West Division.
Dallaire made 22 saves Saturday as the Patriotes rebounded with 5-3 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks in a penalty-filled game. Thiery Poudrier and Mathieu Gravel had a goal and an assist each for the Patriotes, who scored twice in the second half of the third period to pull away. Laurier racked up 14y penalty minutes in the game, while UQTR was assessed 95.
The third-ranked McGill Redmen stayed atop the East division after picking up three points this week, including a 4-1 win over the York Lions Friday and a 2-2 draw with the Guelph Gryphons Saturday. McGill broke the York game open in the second period, scoring three time once on the power play and one short-handed to take a 4-1 lead into the third. Mathieu Leclerc had a goal and an assist for the Redmen, while goaltender Mathieu Poitras stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced for the win.
Fourth-year forward Jeff Richards had two goals and an assist to help the Lakehead Thunderwolves defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues 6-4 Friday in the first of a two-game weekend series. Dan Speer also scored twice, while Shandor Elphonso had three assists for the Wolves. Simon Barg scored two goals for Toronto. Lakehead had an offensive explosion in the rematch Saturday, winning the game 10-0. Jason Lange had two goals and two assist for the Thunderwolves, while Matt Jacques, Joel Scherban, and Peter Cava all had multi-goal games. Grant McCune made 27 saves for the shutout as Lakehead won for the eighth time in 12 games this season. Richards is third in OUA scoring with eight goals and 11 assists in nine games.
Curtis darling made 27 saves helping the Waterloo Warriors to a 2-1 win over the RMC Paladins Friday in Waterloo. Sean Roche and Kevin Hurley both scored power-play markers for the Warriors. Brent Maurice had the Paladins lone goal, also on the power play, at 19:03 of the third period. Waterloo improved to 8-1-1 Saturday as they beat the Queens Golden Gaels 3-2.
In other action this week, the Western Mustangs defeated RMC 6-4 Wednesday. The Windsor Lancers got a hat-trick and two assists from Alex White and two goals and fours assists from Jordie Preston as they pounded the Ryerson Rams 12-2 Friday. Windsor won 4-1 in the rematch Saturday. Also on Saturday, Jonathan Robert scored his second of the game in overtime to lift the Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 5-4 win over York.
