RBC Royal Bank has stepped-up its commitment to Lakehead Thunderwolves Hockey as the new title sponsor of the RBC Varsity Cup Challenge in honour of Jim Johnson.

Murray Walberg, Regional Vice-President of RBC, said RBC Royal Bank is excited to be the new title sponsor of the RBC Varsity Cup Challenge in honour of Jim Johnson. RBC Royal Bank has been involved with Thunderwolves Hockey from the beginning and we understand the importance of this event. He added, We look forward to this new partnership and hope to see everyone come out and watch some fantastic hockey.

Jason Mallon, Executive Director of Lakehead Thunderwolves Hockey, knows that RBC and the Varsity Cup Challenge is a big part of Thunderwolves Hockey. To have RBC come on board in the ninth year of this great event demonstrates their fantastic support for this team and our community, Mallon stated. He went on to say, The new format we adopted last year features two highly-ranked CIS teams in Lakehead and Manitoba, but also showcases and raises funds for the Thunder Bay Kings organization. Without RBC Royal Bank stepping up as a title sponsor, this event would not be possible.

The Lakehead University program has a strong connection to the AAA Kings, as many current and former Thunderwolves have developed their hockey skills while playing for the Kings.

This years event will take place December 29th and 30th at the Fort William Gardens, with the main event a battle between two of the top teams in CIS hockey. The 7th ranked Thunderwolves will take on the 9th ranked Manitoba Bisons both nights at 7:30 p.m., following the 4:00 p.m. games between the Thunder Bay Midget AAA Kings and the Winnipeg AAA Thrashers. One ticket is valid for both the afternoon and evening games per day.
