Former Lakehead mens hockey captain Joel Scherban will be honoured this weekend at Convocation 2007 for his achievements in sport, academics, and contributions to the universitywhen he will be given the prestigious Presidents Award. Scherban is one of only two graduate students receiving the award.

The Presidents Award is given annually to the students who have occupied positions of responsibility in student organizations and who, by their activities and achievement, have earned the gratitude of the University.

The winners of the Presidents Award are personally selected by the President of Lakehead University.

Academic achievement is also one of the additional selection criteria and Scherban has been no stranger to success both in the classroom and on the ice at Lakehead.

Scherban completed an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from Lakehead in 2005 and a Master of Science in Management in the fall of 2006. He served as Captain of the Thunderwolves hockey team for five seasons from 2001-2002 to 2005-2006 and was chosen an OUA First Team All Star in each season he played.

Scherban won numerous OUA and CIS awards including the OUA MVP, the prestigious Joseph P. Sullivan Award as the top CIS Mens Hockey Player in Canada in 2004-2005, CIS and OUA Most Sportsmanlike Player Award (twice for CIS and three times for OUA). Scherban also holds numerous Lakehead hockey records including most overall career points.

In September 2006, he became Lakehead Universitys first ever RBC Top 8 Academic All-Canadian which is presented annually to the eight university students in Canada (a female and male from each conference) who best combine academics, athletics, and community involvement.

Dr. Jerry Phillips, who was one of Scherbans instructors in his Masters program, said Joel was an exemplary student-athlete. Joel would rank as one of the brightest and hardest working students I have taught during my 39 years at Lakehead University.
