T Bay Tel Varsity Cup Preview: Laurier Golden Hawks

The Hawks come into the tourney with a 12-3-1 OUA record (13-7-1 overall); second best in the conference. The Hawks are in first place in the OUA Mid West Division. Laurier is tied for 4th in the CIS with 4.5 goals per game and tied for 8th in goals allowed at 3.1 per game.

Head Coach Kelly Nobes inherited a very strong team and he has the Hawks playing fantastic hockey in his first year at the helm. Nobes said his team is excited about the Varsity Cup. The Laurier Golden Hawks are looking forward to playing in the TBayTel Varsity Cup and spending time in Thunder Bay during the break in our regular season. It will be a great opportunity for us to play three very good hockey programs and help prepare for the second half of the regular season."

Head To Head:

Laurier has only played Toronto so far this season (4-2 loss) and will play Lakehead twice in the second half of the regular season. Lifetime; Laurier is 4-11 against the Thunderwolves and is 0-1 against Calgary and (since 1976-77) are 14-15-10 vs. Toronto in the regular season, 3-4-0 in OUAA/OUA playoffs, and 17-19-10 overall.

The Hawks are led by big gun playmaker Matt Maccarone whose 5 goals and 17 assists puts him 6th in OUA scoring and tied for 9th in the CIS. However, Lauriers success so far this season is because they are getting scoring from throughout their roster.

Players to watch are Mark Voakes (8 goals, 13 assists), Nick Vergeer (5 goals, 13 assists), Matt Grennier (5 goals, 11 assists), Rob Dmytruk (8 goals, 7 assists), Chris DiUbaldo (7 goals, 7 assists), Ryan Courtney (5 goals, 7 assists), Nathan Peacock (9 goals, 3 assists), Jeff Borrows (2 goals, 9 assists), and Riley Moher (3 goals, 7 assists).

The Hawks play solid team defense and have three good netminders in Mike Thomson (7-1-1, GAA 3.78, SV% .880), Aaron Forer (4-1, GAA 2.23, SV% .920), and Jeff MacDougald (1-1, GAA 2.16, SV% .950).
