The No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves defeated the York Lions 7-2 Saturday night in the second game of Day 3 action at the sixth annual Lakehead Thunderwolves TBayTel Varsity Cup mens hockey tournament at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.

The win gives Lakehead a perfect 3-0 round-robin record and a berth in the championship final Sunday night against the No. 9 Manitoba Bisons (2-1 in tourney play) at 7:30 pm EST. The game will be videowebcast live with ordering information available at http://events.news-cast.com/events/Lakehead. The Wolves had a 2-0 lead after the first; 5-1 after the second, and then added two more to Yorks one in the third period. The game was very fast and exciting until midway through the second when things turned nasty after a rough York penalty and multiple penalties ensued for the majority of the rest of the game.

Lakehead freshman netminder Kyle Moir was very sharp; playing his best home game in a Thunderwolves jersey to backstop his team to the win. York starting goalie Carlo DiRienzo made a bushel of big saves, even though he allowed five goals, before he was replaced by Devin Ramasawmy to begin the third. Lakehead outshot York 48-25 in the game.

Lakeheads special team play was very sharp; going 3-10 on the powerplay and killing off 12 of 13 York powerplays; including four 5-on-3 situations.

The Wolves were led offensively by Kriss Hogg with 2 goals and an assist, Pierre-Marc Guilbault with a goal and two assists, Devin Welsh with a goal and an assist, Mike Wehrstedt with a goal and an assist with the Wolves other goals coming from Dan Speer and Konrad Breutsch; his second in three games as a Lakehead player.
