The York Lions return to the TBayTel Varsity Cup for the second time; their first appearance being in 2003. The Lions have won five OUA Queens Cup championships and three CIS University Cup national championships and are hungry to add a Varsity Cup to their trophy case.
The Lions have a 7-7-3 OUA record and are in second place in the OUA Mid West Division; and have been playing strong hockey of late heading into the holiday break; including a 7-3 win over then No. 10 Waterloo in the final game before the break.
Head Coach Bill Maguire said the Lions are ready to roar at the TBayTel Varsity Cup. "We are really looking forward to the opportunity to play in the highly regarded Tbay Tel Varsity Cup Tournament against three quality opponents. As a team we look at this event as excellent preparation for the difficult second half of our OUA schedule."
York's top line of Nathan Brooks (5 goals, 6 assists), Tyler Harrison (2 goals, 9 assists), and Chris Jones (7 goals, 7 assists) could be as good as any line in the OUA and the Wolves will have to shut this line down this weekend.
Other Lions to watch are Jake Van Allen (3 goals, 11 assists; team scoring leader), Matt Restoule (6 goals, 6 assists), Doug Henderson (5 goals, 3 assists), Ryan Hyland (1 goal, 8 assists), Kyle Searle (2 goals, 7 assists), and Matt Passfield (6 goals, 3 assists).
Carlo DiRienzo is the final line of defense for the Lions and has a 6-7-1 record, a GAA of 2.84 and a SV% of .910.
The Thunderwolves are 17-6 all-time against York and have outscored the Lions of 97-55 in those 23 games. The Wolves defeated the Lions 2-1 and 6-4 in their two regular season meetings this year in November in Toronto.
