Team Canada battled back from a three goal deficit but still fell to the Czech Republic team 5-4 Saturday night in Telfs, Austria at the Winter Universiade Games. Canada outshot the Czechs 53-24 (including 18-3 in the third period) in the game but Czech goalie Tomas Dusek was the story of the match, turning aside 49 Canadian shots. Lakehead's Jeff Richards had an incredible chance to tie the game when he was awarded a penalty shot with 15 seconds left but was stopped by Dusek.

Canada's goals came from Lakehead's Richards and Murray Magill, Western's Mike Rice, and UQTR's Jean Philippe Glaude. Richards, Erik Lodge, and Rice added an assist as well. Radek Hlavaty scored twice for the Czechs while Filip Pesan, Roman Novotny, and Petr Haluza added singles.

Team Canada Head Coach Clarke Singer was happy with his team's effort. "We did a lot of what we wanted to do tonight. We had a game plan and the guys stuck to it. Whenever you can outshout a solid team like the Czechs 53-24, you have to be proud of the effort. Unfortunately, sometimes you are not rewarded for your efforts, and tonight was a good example. We are very pleased with everything, except for the final score. The Ukraine (Canada's opponent Sunday) plays a similar style to the Czech Republic. Despite their 0-2 record they played well against Russia and the
Czechs, and have a lot of skilled player. I guess it will be a battle between two teams kind of fighting for their life."

Canada drew a whopping 143 minutes in penalties as compared to the Czechs' 55 minutes; most coming from a major skirmish at the end of the game resulting in one Team Czech and four Team Canada players drawing game misconducts.

Period scores were 3-1 Czechs, 1-1, and 2-1 Canada. The loss puts Canada's record at 1-1 in Group B play while the Czechs go to 2-0-1. Next up for Team Canada is the Ukraine on Sunday afternoon in Telfs.
