Lakehead University Athletics announced that because of recent changes in the Athletic Department, John Payetta will no longer be employed with our Men's Varsity Hockey program.

Tom Warden said "John has been an exemplary employee of Lakehead University and the Lakehead University Varsity Hockey Program. His ability to manage the operations of the hockey team and to entertain people on a nightly basis at the Fort William Gardens has helped Lakehead hockey thrive. In all his years at Lakehead university, John Payetta did not miss one hockey game, and that is certainly a testament to his dedication. I'd like to thank John for his work at Lakehead university and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours."

Payetta's time with the Thunderwolves spawned many rewarding relationships.  He reflects, "When I first joined the Lakehead Thunderwolves in 2002, I had no idea how much I would learn as my role expanded over the years or through the many challenges that would arise. I do know that one of reasons for my longevity was the support I received from countless dedicated and capable people that I met along the way. I want to thank those that I have been fortunate enough to work with over the years, but there are far too many to name individually."

"So to my colleagues at the hockey office and on campus, as well as the coaches, players, game night staff, volunteers, media members, board of directors, sponsors and fans, I appreciate all that you have given. I have become friends with many of you, and for that I count myself lucky. I have also seen a lot of you come and go over the years, and now it is my time with the team that has come to an end."

"I leave the program with my head held high because I gave it my all, and I am grateful to have been a steward of the hockey team for 18 seasons. I wish everyone involved with the Thunderwolves all the best going forward."

Thunderwolves Hockey will be back on the ice October 22nd and 23rd against Northland College where they will see their first opponent since February 2020, their first game without John Payetta.
