The offseason is well underway for Lakehead Thunderwolves Hockey, and Head Coach Andrew Wilkins has wasted little time preparing for another competitive season in the OUA West.
Already, six players have committed to the Thunderwolves for the 2026-27 campaign as Lakehead continues to build on a successful stretch over the past 4 seasons.
The Thunderwolves have established themselves as one of the OUA West's premier programs. Since 2022, Lakehead has finished no lower than fifth place in the division while compiling an impressive 65-46-12 record. During that span, the Wolves reached the OUA West Finals in 2022-23 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs in 2024-25 before losing to the TMU Bold who eventually finished 4th in Canada.
With several key departures from last year's roster, Wilkins and his staff have focused heavily on recruiting impact players capable of contributing immediately.
A major area of focus has once again been the BCHL, widely regarded as the top Junior A league in Canada. The Thunderwolves have secured commitments from forwards Kye Benoche and Carter Hesselgrave, along with defenceman Philip Hagen. All three players arrive with strong junior resumes and are expected to make an immediate impact in the Lakehead lineup.
The Thunderwolves have also added several talented players with ties to Thunder Bay.
Nicholas Holomego joins the program after appearing in more than 100 games in the QMJHL, bringing valuable major junior experience to the roster. In goal, Kolton Bourret arrives from the MHL's Summerside Western Capitals and is expected to provide depth behind returning starter Carson Cherepak.
Perhaps one of the most intriguing additions is Thunder Bay native Luca Riccardi. After captaining the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL, Riccardi returns home to continue his hockey career with the Thunderwolves and adds leadership, experience, and offensive upside to the forward group.
While the incoming class has generated plenty of excitement, the Thunderwolves will continue to explore opportunities to strengthen the roster throughout the offseason.
Lakehead faces the challenge of replacing several impactful veterans who have graduated and moved on to professional opportunities. Forward Olivier Pouliot has signed with the Erding Gladiators in Germany, while forward Josh Van Unen will begin his professional career in France. Nick DeGrazia has also taken the next step, joining the ECHL's Wichita Thunder.
The Wolves will also bid farewell to several key contributors, including brothers Liam and Richard Whittaker, Christian Cicigoi, and Keighan Gerrie, all of whom played important roles in helping Lakehead remain among the OUA's most competitive programs.
Despite those departures, the future remains bright in Thunder Bay. With a strong recruiting class already in place and additional commitments potentially on the horizon, the Thunderwolves appear poised to remain a contender in the OUA West.
As preparations continue throughout the summer, one thing is clear: the next chapter of Thunderwolves Hockey is already taking shape.
