Two more Lakehead grads turn pro

THUNDER BAY, ON Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey team is pleased to announce that Dan Speer and Mark Soares have signed contracts to play professional hockey in Europe. With these signings, the entire 2010 graduating class of the Thunderwolves hockey team has now turned pro.


Former Thunderwolves Scott Dobben, Shandor Alphonso, and Matt Dias all signed professional contracts earlier this summer.
Mark Soares will be joining Lakehead alumni Mike Wehrstedt and Scott Dobben with Kaufbeuren of the German 2 Bundesliga. During his time at Lakehead, Soares was named the OUA West Rookie of the Year as well as an OUA West All-Star. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration.


Dan Speer will be moving to England as he has signed with the Newcastle Vipers of the EIHL. Speer was the leading scorer in the OUA during the 2007-08 season, and leaves as the third all-time leading scorer in Lakehead Thunderwolves history. He graduated withan Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree, as well as his Masters in Business Administration.


Head Coach Joel Scherban says he is Pleased that both Soares and Speer are continuing their hockey careers at the professional level. Scherban adds Our organization is proud that we could play a role in the development of the five players that have turned pro this summer, and we wish them all the best.
