THUNDER BAY, Ont. (CIS) - The No.4-seeded UNB Varsity Reds jumped out to a stunning 5-1 first-period lead and never looked back en route to a 6-3 upset of the No.1-Alberta Golden Bears in the Pool-A opener of the 2009 CIS men's hockey championship, Thursday night, at the Fort William Gardens.

With the win, the AUS finalist V-Reds take the early lead in Pool A and get a day off on Friday before facing the No.-6 and tournament host Lakehead Thunderwolves (0-0) in their second and final round-robin duel Saturday at 7 p.m. (Rogers Sportsnet).

UNB avenged a 3-2 loss to Alberta in last year's University Cup gold-medal final.

The Canada West champion Bears (0-1), who own the all-time record of 13 CIS titles - three more than second-place Toronto, will battle Lakehead Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Five different players scored for UNB in the first stanza, four of them freshmen, including forward Dion Campbell of Melville, Sask., Luke Lynes of Rochester Hills, Mich., third-year forward Lachlan MacIntosh of Perth Andover, N.B., Jordan Clendenning of Fredericton, and forward Jimmy Cuddihy of Aylmer, Que.

MacIntosh assisted on the second V-Reds goal and added the insurance marker on a breakaway with 6:58 left in the third. He was named UNB's player of the game.

Sophomore forward Derek Ryan of Spokane, Wash., cut the UNB lead to 3-1 at the 12:36 mark in the opening frame and added a goal and an assist in the second as Alberta made it a 5-3 affair, earning Bears game-MVP honours in the losing cause.

Linemate Chad Klassen, a third-year right-winger from Saskatoon, scored Alberta's third goal.

UNB had a 32-29 edge in shots on net and went 1-of-3 with the man advantage, while Alberta was blanked on four power-play opportunities.

Rookie goaltender Travis Fullerton of Riverview, N.B., earned the win while first-team all-Canadian Aaron Sorochan of Edmonton took the loss.

MORE TO COME!

GAME NOTES: Both teams were missing key players as UNB's second-team all-Canadian forward Hunter Tremblay of Timmins, Ont., was sidelined with the flu, while Alberta's third-year centre Ian McDonald of Edmonton, the 2008 University Cup MVP, was out with a concussion? The all-time University Cup series between UNB and Alberta is now tied at 4-4..
