Lakehead University and the shareholders of University Hockey Development Inc., the Lakehead men's hockey team operating group, ratified a new agreement today. The agreement was made to solidify Lakehead hockey's unique and very successful partnership between the university and the private sector.
The move from profit to non-profit status of Lakehead varsity Hockey meant it was necessary to draft a new agreement between Lakehead University and the new non-profit organization.
The Thunderwolves are the only team in CIS hockey that operate with such a partnership while the Regina Rams and the Laval Rouge et Or of CIS men's football have similar private operating groups. Over the first four seasons of Thunderwolves hockey, Lakehead has the largest attendance in CIS hockey and are a close second only to Laval football in overall attendance in all CIS sports.
Lakehead President Dr. Fred Gilbert said today's signing ensures the continuation of the special relationship between Lakehead and the private sector in Thunder Bay. "There is little doubt in my mind that the success of Thunderwolves' hockey reflects the special partnership that the University has forged with committed community individuals. The new agreement clearly spells out the working relationship and will support the partnership effectively for the foreseeable future."
Team President Rory Cava said that Lakehead hockey and its fans are the winners in the new agreement. "We are proud to announce that the new agreement ensures the long term viability and strength of the unique relationship that Lakehead University has developed with it's business partners and the community of Thunder Bay. We have all shared the benefits of some great hockey over the past four years and I'm sure that tradition will continue."
Lakehead Athletic Director Tom Warden said today's agreement was very important for Lakehead hockey. "Five years ago, signing the original agreement to start the program was a monumental step. Today, five years on, the re-signing shows just how important this relationship has been to the program, the school, and the City of Thunder Bay. It will move us forward and solidify our place in Canada as a uniquely managed program and ensure great hockey for our fans. This is a great day for Thunderwolves Hockey!"
