Wehrstedt Leads Team to Belgian Championship

Former Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey player Mike Wehrstedt celebrated April Fools Day in style as he helped lead his HYC Herentals hockey team to its first Belgian First Division Championship in 11 years.

Herentals defeated the Turnout Whitecaps 6-1 in Game 7 of the best of seven Belgian championship series.

Wehrstedt had a fantastic rookie pro season in Europe; leading his team and the Belgian First Division in scoring with 51 goals and 72 assists (123 points) in 39 regular season games. He also led all playoff scorers with 17 goals and 16 assists (33 points) in 11 playoff games. In four exhibition games; he notched 5 goals and 5 assists giving him a season total of 73 goals and 93 assists (166 points) in 54 total games.

The celebration is not over for Wehrstedt and his Herentals teammates as the City of Herentals will be putting on a parade on for the team.
