Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey team are pleased to announce that defenceman Jay Gilbert has committed to the program and will be joining the squad this September.

The 62, 205 pound rearguard played five years in the OHL with the Niagara Ice Dogs, Plymouth Whalers, and Owen Sound Attack. In 2010-11, Gilbert played a big part in winning an OHL championship with Owen Sound and competed in the Memorial Cup tournament. His best year statistically came in 2011-12, when he scored 10 goals and 23 assists as a mainstay on the blue-line for the Attack.

Gilbert, a native of Port Stanley, ON, had a good feeling about Lakehead early on. When I came to Thunder Bay on my recruiting visit, it just felt right, he said. I know its a hockey town with outstanding fan support. Lakehead is known for having great academics and one of the best hockey programs in Canada, and I'm eager to get started chasing down a Queens Cup championship.

Thunderwolves Head Coach Joel Scherban likes what Gilbert brings to the table. "Jay is a solid, stay at home defenceman who also has offensive potential, Scherban said. We look forward to adding Jay's leadership and championship experience to our program."
