Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey team are pleased to announce that defenceman Patrick Murphy of St. Catharines, Ontario will be joining the program for the 2016-17 season.

The 6-foot, 195-pound rearguard played five years in the OHL, the first four as an Erie Otter where he was a teammate of Connor McDavid, the NHLs first overall draft pick in 2015.

Murphy was traded to the Sudbury Wolves for his fifth and final year where he scored 13 goals and added 27 assists for 40 points in 68 games.

He also played 7 games with Columbus of the Southern Professional Hockey League at the end of the 2015-16 season where he recorded a goal and an assist.

Murphy is excited to begin the next chapter of his life in Thunder Bay. "Having heard a lot of good things about Lakehead, I was interested but wanted to see it for myself, he said. Both the city and the university exceeded my expectations and after my two-day visit I knew it was the place I wanted to be. I was very impressed with the campus and facilities as well as the hockey program. Im happy to be joining the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Lakehead Coach Bill McDonald is pleased that Murphy has decided to become a Thunderwolf. We think Patrick will provide us with some offence from the back end like he did in the OHL, McDonald said. He was also won the Players Player award as voted by his teammates in Sudbury, and that tells me he has the type of character were looking for.
