First Year Lakehead Engineering student Rob Cundari got an exciting and unexpected phone call on Wednesday from Lakehead Assistant Coach Paul Mackett asking the Sault Ste. Marie native to don the goalie pads as backup goaltender this weekend for the Thunderwolves in their home series vs. the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Lakehead was in need of a backup for starter Chris Whitley as fellow Lakehead starter Grant McCune suffered a groin injury last Monday night in the Thunderwolves game against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Cundari played two seasons for the Markham Waxers of the OHA Jr. A League and two seasons for the Soo Thunderbirds of the NOJHL so has high level goaltending experience. However, he was thrilled with the opportunity. It actually came as quite a shock and was totally unexpected! Its quite a thrill and I am very excited and very proud to be able to don the school jersey.

This season Cundari is playing goal for the Soo Brew Crew of the Lakehead Campus Rec. League; a team made up entirely of Sault Ste Marie natives. When asked on his thoughts of getting into a game vs. Saskatchewan; Cundari said he was ready. Ill be prepared. Its not expected as my role is backup but as backup you have to be ready at any time and I would be very excited to see some action at this level.
