Wolves Claim OUA Honours

The Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey team claimed many honours as the OUA announced its award winners today. The Thunderwolves had three First Team All-Stars, one Second Team All-Star, two All-Rookie Team selections, and two major award winners. Leading the Wolves charge wasJeff Richards being named OUA West Conference MVP while Joel Scherbanwon his second consecutiveMost Sportsmanlike Player Award.

Second year sensation Richards who was named OUA West Conference MVP and a First Team All-Star. The second year General Arts student from Kenora, Ont. led the OUA with 1.95 points per game. Richards was a Second Team All-Star, OUA All-Rookie Team member, and CIS All-Rookie team member last season. Richards has been named OUA Athlete of the Week three times in his two seasons at Lakehead.Joining him as a First Team All-Star was third year Lakehead Captain Scherban, who was named for the third consecutive year. The Commerce student from Thunder Bay, Ont. also garnered his second consecutive OUA West Most Sportsmanlike Player Award. Scherban won the CIS Most Sportsmanlike Player Award last season and was selecteda CIS Athlete of the Week this season. Joining them on the First Team was Lakehead defenseman, and Thunder Bay native, Mike Jacobsen. The second year General Arts student received his first honour from the OUA. All three had played for the OUA Selects Team that played against the Canadian National Junior Team in December.

Stellar third year goaltender Grant McCune was named to the Second Team All-Stars. This was the first honour for the Business Student from Sherwood Park, AB. Standout defensemen Kris Callaway (Business, North Delta, B.C.) and Steve Rawski (General Arts, Missisauga, Ont.) were named to the All-Rookie Teams. Callaway played for the OUA Selects Team in December while Rawski was an alternate.
