Wolves Defeat Rams 8-3

A balanced attack led theLakehead Thunderwolves mens hockey team to an 8-3 win over the Ryerson Rams Friday night in Toronto. The Wolves had seven players register goals; led by captain Jeff Richards who returned from suspension to notch 2 goals and an assist while team scoring leader Tobias Whelan had a goal and 2 assists.

Mark Soares, Richard Molenaar, and Mark Robinson had a goal and an assist each while singles came from Jarryd Brend and Nathan Breukelman. Shandor Alphonso, Mike Wehrstedt, and Dan Speer added two assists each.

Ryersons goals came from Kevin Day, Sergie Frenkel, and Mike Kavanaugh.

Lakehead netminder Matti Korhonen stopped 22 Ryerson shots to record his first OUA win in his first OUA start. Shots on goal were 48-25 for Lakehead. Ryerson netminder Arawn Garbutt made some good saves but was replaced at 13:13 of the second after Lakeheads sixth goal. New Ryersonn netminder Pierre Beaulieu let in two Lakehead goals the rest of the way.

Lakehead led 3-1 after the first period, 7-3 after the second, and added one in the third to arrive at the final score.

Lakehead now has a 6-2-1 OUA record (8-5-1 overall)) while Ryerson is 1-8 in conference play and has a 1-10 overall mark.
