The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team got off to late starts twice today, and ended up taking a 5-1 loss to the Lancers Friday night in Windsor.

The teams early morning flight to Toronto was delayed by two hours Friday morning, and then the Wolves didnt get on the scoreboard until they were already down 4-0 in the third period.

Brett Vandehogen scored the only goal of the first period at 5:48 to give Windsor the early 1-0 lead. The Wolves could only muster 6 shots on the Lancers goal and were outshot 8-6 for the period.

Windsor got off to a quick start in the second period when Kyle Lang beat Thunderwolves senior netminder Kyle Moir (Calgary, AB) on the power play at the 1:00 mark. The Lancers increased their lead to 3-0 when Mike Lombardi scored at 18:02. Lakehead outshot Windsor 16-10 in the second stanza.

The Lancers continued to roll in the third period with their second power play marker of the night, when Ryan Caicco popped one in at the 0:36 mark, giving Windsor a 4-0 lead. The Thunderwolves Brock McPherson (Brampton, ON) broke the Lakehead scoring drought on a power play goal at 2:11, narrowing the gap to 4-1. But just over a minute later, Windsor replied when Scott Gillis netted one at 3:13 to make the score 5-1 for the Lancers. Lakeheads Moir was then replaced by sophomore Alex Dupuis, (Thunder Bay, ON), who finished out the game in net for the Wolves.

Lakehead outshot Windsor 16-14 in the third period, and 38-32 overall, but Lancers goaltender Jim Watt was solid between the pipes, making 37 saves on the night.

The Thunderwolves will look to rebound when the second game of the series goes Saturday night in Windsor at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Rock 94.3 FM.
