The CIS No. 10 Lakehead Thunderwolves mens hockeyteam lost7-6 in OT to the visiting York Lions Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.

The Wolves had a big edge in play and outshot York 43-23 on the night and had a lot of excellent scoring opportunities but they were denied repeatedly by Lions netminder Carlo di Rienzo who made about a dozen spectacular goal stopping saves in the game; including three within the span of about 5 seconds during a Lakehead powerplay.

Both Lakehead netminders Chris Whitley and Kyle Moir saw action with Moir coming in as relief after Whitley let in three goals on 11 shots. However Moir didnt fare much better; allowing 4 goals on 12 shots.

Yorks goals came from Tyler Harrison (the game winner), Jesse Grespan and Cassidy Prestion with a pair each and singles from Vitaly Lanochkin andScott Restoule. Harrison also added three assists.

Lakehead was very effective on the powerplay and going 4-7 compared to Yorks 2-4 but Lakehead also allowed a shorthanded tally by the Lions.

The Wolves Brock McPherson played a very rugged game; battling hard in the corners and scored two goals to go along with two assists. Lakeheads other goals came from Andy Hyvarinen, Scott Dobben, Mark Soares, and Dan Speer. Speer also added a helper.

Mitch Maunu and Drew Kivell were solid defenders on the night and Bryan Wilson showed some offensive flash. Pierre-Marc Guilbault played a decent two-way game. Tobias Whelan also played very well defensively for the Wolves and also helped create a lot of offensive chances. Wilson and Whelan picked up two assists each.

Lakehead goes to 7-3-2 in OUA play and 9-5-2 overall while York goes to 5-5-1 in conference play and 7-6-1 overall.

Lakehead is on the road next weekend when they head to St. Catharines, Ontario to challenge the Brock Badgers; the team that denied the Wolves a berth in the Queens and University Cup last season.

The Molson's Three Stars were:
1) York: Tyler Harrison
2) Lakehead: Brock McPherson
3) York: Cassidy Preston
